Hosting with Heart

Early in my hosting career, I thought the job was about energy: keep the pace up, keep the crowd loud, keep things moving. It took me years to understand that the job is actually about attention. A great host isn't the loudest person in the room; they're the most aware one. They notice when a joke has run its course, when a speech is running long and the room is getting restless, when a quiet moment needs space instead of a punchline. Reading a room is a discipline built from hundreds of rooms (weddings, galas, conferences, funerals, product launches), each one teaching you something the last one didn't. If there's one thing I'd tell anyone starting out in this work, it's this: the microphone amplifies your voice, but it's your attention that actually holds the room.
